COBLESKILL, N.Y. — Whether it’s driving, riding, busing, or even running supporters of the Howe Caverns casino said no matter what it takes, they will make it to Albany on Monday to have their voices heard.

“I’m going to do a bunch of combined legs. I’m going to do between 13 and 15 miles,” said one runner.

The Scary Leg Runners will probably take the cake for most extreme way to get to Monday’s public hearing, with 12 runners divvying up the 37 mile journey.

“We hope the casino comes to Cobleskill,” said the runner.

Residents from the Schoharie County ARC helped the runners get underway. They brought the baton, which holds the speech they will read to the casino siting commission down the hill and kicked the relay off.

“It’s our time in Schoharie County and we are looking forward to having a casino, which will mean job opportunities for people,” said Tammy Ruise from the Schoharie County ARC.

Groups of supporters are also being bused back and forth throughout the day. That’s in addition to coordinated motorcycle caravans and people driving themselves.

“I’m all for it. Employment, jobs, great,” said one supporter.

Meanwhile back on the road, it’s the end of the first leg of the relay and with rain beginning to fall spirits remained high.

“This is what our community is about, just getting out and doing it,” said Pamela Newell, who is running part of the relay.

Although, the runners are running away from Howe Caverns today it’s all in an effort to make sure that one day soon, people from across the Northeast will be running toward the new Howe Caverns Casino and Resort.
